… This article is an attempt to draw up an inventory of Ibadi publications in Egypt, Zanzibar, Algeria and Tunisia. Mush of material was collected in May-June 1972, during a trip to Mizab, Tripoli, Jerba and Tunis, financed by Het Oostresh Instituut in Leiden (The Netherlands), and a follow-up trip to Cairo in Septembre. In February-half April 2004, thanks to the Omani Ministry of Endowment and Religious Affairs, I had the opportunity to visit Oman and to collect new material and to fill in many details.

In every part of the article roughly two periods occur : circa 1880-1920s and circa 1920s-1960s. In the part on Egypt the following subjects are treated : al-matbaa al-Baruniyya of Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Baruni, Matbaat al-Azhâr al-bâruniyya of Sulaymân b. Abdallah al-bârûni, the publishing activities of Qasim b. Saïd al-Shammakhi and Mustapha b. Ismaïl al-Misri, books published elsewhere in Caire (c. 1890s-1920s), the Wikalat al-Bahhar (al-Jamus), the Ibadi students’ home in Cairo, the publishing activities of Abu Ishaq Ibrahim Itfayyish, and publications in Cairo in the period of Itfayyish’ activities (1920s-1960s). In the part on Zanzibar, publications of al-Matbaa al-Sultaniyya are listed, works perhaps printed at this printing press or printed elsewhere, and a list is given of newspapers in Zanzibar (and Oman). As for Algeria there is of publications in circa last quarter 20th century, and a list of publications of Algeria in the period 1920s-1960s. The same goes for Tunisia.
